Main-Danube Canal

Stand: 12.06.2026

The Main-Danube Canal Bridge between Erlangen and the Dechsendorf district is closed to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 tons. Public transportation is exempt. The service road running east of the Main-Danube Canal is closed during construction in the area of the bridge construction site.

The Nuremberg State Building Authority has closed the Main-Danube Canal Bridge on State Route 2240 between Erlangen and Dechsendorf. Starting in March 2025, vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 7.5 tons will no longer be permitted to cross the bridge. An exception applies to school buses and public transit buses, which may continue to use the bridge with a special permit. Access to the construction site is also permitted. Additionally, the four lanes have been reduced to two. This measure is intended to reduce the traffic load on the bridge structure.

Detour for heavy vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians

Traffic with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 tons will be routed via the “Kosbacher Damm” canal crossing, located approximately 1.5 km further south. The detour follows Am Europakanal, Kosbacher Damm, and Möhrendorfer Straße. The speed limit on Möhrendorfer Straße has been reduced to 30 km/h to minimize the impact on residents as much as possible. The service road running east of the Main-Danube Canal is closed in the area of the bridge construction site during the construction period. The detour route for pedestrians and cyclists runs via Membacher Weg – Schlehenstraße – Heiligenlohstraße – Sankt Johann.

Why the closure?

A consulting firm was commissioned by the Nuremberg State Building Authority to conduct a new structural assessment of the bridge, utilizing current methods and findings. The results showed that the structure is no longer capable of handling full traffic volume and must therefore be restricted. This restriction is accompanied by an intensive monitoring program to observe the bridge’s load-bearing behavior.

Current Status

The Nuremberg State Building Authority will begin construction of the replacement bridge on June 15, 2026. Work will begin with the setup of the construction site facilities and site access. This will be followed by utility line installation and foundation work. Subsequently, construction of the abutments and the pre-assembly area will commence. Assembly of the steel superstructure is scheduled to begin in January 2027.

The Erlangen-Nuremberg State Building Authority is responsible for the construction project.
