Nuremberg - Bamberg metropolitan cycle path: cooperation agreed

Stand: 01.04.2025

16 partners of the inter-municipal alliance "Metropolitan Cycle Route from Nuremberg to Bamberg" sign agreement to work on the next project phase.

Ein Gruppenbild. Two years after the last meeting, the steering and working group for the inter-municipal cycle path project "Metropolradweg Nürnberg - Bamberg" met in Erlangen on March 20. Following the positive conclusion of the feasibility study for the cycle connection between the Nuremberg and Bamberg locks, the inter-municipal cooperation agreement was signed. This was preceded by a coordination-intensive interim phase and the receipt of the funding decision. The cycle link has a total length of 65 kilometers. It is intended to strengthen cycle traffic on the Regnitz Valley axis with uniform quality and greater safety (Photo: Group photo, signing of the inter-municipal cooperation agreement. What the agreement regulates

  • The district of Bamberg continues to lead the project
  • the contracts to be awarded will be largely carried out by the city of Erlangen
  • Tasks and obligations of the partners
  • Distribution of costs for the upcoming design and approval planning.

The basis for the upcoming planning is

  • the results of the feasibility study
  • the defined preferred route
  • a table of measures modified by the municipalities, which have made adjustments in some areas.

From the large city of Nuremberg to the smallest municipality with 2,200 inhabitants: everyone is pulling in the same direction

Erlangen's Lord Mayor Florian Janik: "I am delighted that the metropolitan region is moving closer together through cycling: Erlangen will contribute its experience from its own high-speed cycle connections to Nuremberg and Herzogenaurach and, in the next important step, will take over the tendering of the EU-wide specialist planning contract, among other things."

Bamberg's District Administrator Johann Kalb: "After receiving funding for the planning from the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport and additional funding from the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Building and Transport, we can reach the next important milestone in this fantastic project today with the signing of this groundbreaking agreement. We can be proud that our region is so united and that the 16 signatories of the planning agreement, from the city of Nuremberg to the smallest municipality with 2,200 inhabitants, are pulling together to achieve the common goal."

What happens next

  • This year will see the award of the technical project management contract and the Europe-wide invitation to tender for the planning services
  • The actual specialist planning will follow next year
  • In 2027, the project should be completed with planning documents ready for submission for the applicable building law procedures and applications for federal and state funding for the construction phases.
