Planning for Regnitzstadt to continue

The city of Erlangen intends to develop a new city quarter in a central location called Regnitzstadt on the site of the large parking lot west of the train station. The city council approved the framework plan at its June meeting.

Creating a centrally located urban quarter

The framework plan was developed by the "scheuvens + wachten plus" office. It was presented in May 2024. It forms the basis for the next steps in the project. The aim is to create a modern and centrally located urban quarter on the former large parking lot, which will serve as a mobility hub and also continue to serve as a central parking area. The integration into the urban context and the location in relation to the Regnitz landscape make the site interesting not only for commercial, service and educational facilities of all kinds, but also for the establishment of residential offers in a wide range of segments.

Regnitzstadt as a mobility hub

In terms of mobility, one of Regnitzstadt's key objectives is to strengthen the area around the railroad station as a gateway to the city. Also in view: as a mobility hub, it should connect the means of transport - including the city-country railroad - with each other and make it easier to switch between them. In this way, daily journeys can be made using different modes of transport and motorized private transport can be reduced. In addition to the new usage options and the establishment as a mobility hub, the Regnitzstadt will continue to take into account the need for parking spaces in the current large parking lot. It should also relieve the city center of traffic.

Close citizen participation

The administration is also clearly tasked with involving citizens closely in the other project phases, as has been the case to date. Further technical issues are now to be clarified on the basis of the framework plan. Further steps include planning competitions for various buildings and open spaces in order to achieve an appropriate design for the new entrance to the city.
