VAG_Rad bike rental system is well used

The city of Erlangen in particular is also living up to its reputation as a bike-friendly city, as the high user numbers show. In 2024, around 8,000 customers rented a VAG_Rad around 70,000 times at the 19 stations, just over half of them for the first time. Three stations were visited particularly frequently:

• Hugenottenplatz with 1,400
• the main station with 1,000
• the Sieglitzhof district with 900

loans and returns.

It also emerged that the VAG_Rad is preferred for commuting to work, university, etc. Leisure use is a rather subordinate usage argument. This is indicated by increased numbers of rentals in the morning between 7:00 and 9:00 and in the evening between 15:30 and 18:00.

Ease of use

The simple concept is another reason for its success. After registering for free in the NürnbergMOBIL app, you can simply scan the QR code on a VAG_Rad bike and the frame lock opens automatically. The bike can then be returned to an official station or within the flex zone.

Outlook

Further improvements are planned for the current year. In Erlangen, for example, the Flexzone is to be extended significantly to the eastern border of the city and southwards into the area of Paul-Gossen-Straße. In addition, further stations are to be set up over the course of the year, for example at Theodor-Heuss-Anlage, Röthelheimbad and Freibad West. Two further stations are also planned at Dechsendorfer Weiher and Wöhrmühle.
