Sabine Bock - Environment and climate protection officer
Stand: 28.05.2024
Sabine Bock has been the head of the Department for the Environment and Climate Protection as a professional city councillor since 2020.
Curriculum vitae
I have been Head of Department VII - Department for the Environment and Climate Protection - since December 1, 2020.
I have my roots in Erlangen, because I was born here. After graduating from Christian-Ernst Gymnasium, I studied landscape architecture with a focus on landscape planning at Weihenstephan University of Applied Sciences and graduated with a degree in landscape architecture (FH). After eight years at the non-profit Munich environmental organization Green City e.V., I helped develop and implement various campaigns as a project manager. After working for the international women's, environment and development network WECF and the Munich city council faction Die Grünen - Rosa Liste, I have been head of the environmental and climate protection department of the city of Erlangen since December 2020. In this role, I represent the city of Erlangen on the Environment Committee and the Climate Working Group of the Bavarian Association of Cities and Towns. I was also elected 2nd Chairwoman of the newly founded Fund for Climate Protection and Sustainable Development of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region in summer 2021.
I am responsible for the Office for the Environment and Energy, the Office for Veterinary and Consumer Health Protection and the drainage company. One of my main tasks is to promote the implementation of climate protection goals in Erlangen as a cross-sectional task for the city.
Sabine Bock in conversation
I was very pleased to come back to Erlangen and to be able to contribute my experience here as a speaker. A lot of things in the city are very familiar to me, a lot has changed a lot and rediscovering or rediscovering them gives me great pleasure. Erlangen had a great influence on me in my youth: the everyday nature of cycling, the high level of ecological awareness that I experienced very strongly at my school, as well as the events of that time such as the dying of the forest and the discussions about the way we supply energy after Chernobyl and in the wake of the Gulf War.
It is the dominant topic because the urgency is clear. It was confirmed once again by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 6th Assessment Report. That is why it is important to me that the issue does not remain with me as climate officer, but becomes an issue for the entire city administration and urban society. The necessary change will only be successful if climate protection becomes everyone's everyday business.
Klimaaufbruch is the continuation of the climate emergency resolution passed by Erlangen City Council in 2019. The City Council decided to adhere to the Paris 1.5°C target and to be climate-neutral before 2030. With the creation of the Climate Awakening Roadmap, we are currently developing a roadmap with the city community on how this goal can be implemented in Erlangen. Ultimately, everyone has to get involved - this is the only way to ensure that the Climate Awakening "arrives" and climate neutrality is achieved within the necessary short timeframe.
Greenhouse gases are no longer emitted, energy is used wisely and the energy we need is generated from renewable sources. This means solar panels on every roof, on the facades and installed as roofing for cycle paths. Our buildings have all been energy-efficiently renovated and hardly consume any more energy. In addition, new open, recreational and green spaces are being created, as cars no longer require so much space and only make up a quarter of the current stock. And use the mobility options. Walking, cycling, scooters and public transport have priority in Erlangen - public transport services have quadrupled and there are mobility stations on every other corner. This is just a small part of a climate-friendly Erlangen - of course there is much more to it.
On a city tour, I usually show my guests the Schlossplatz and Schlossgarten, Schiffstrasse and the surrounding area, the Bergkirchweih grounds and the Exerzierplatz nature reserve.
My favorite place to be is the green spaces on Ohmplatz, because that's where I grew up.
It all depends on my mood. I particularly enjoy live music - from opera to rock concerts.
Bicycle, photos, books.
