How to Stay Safe in High Temperatures

Stand: 26.06.2026

Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and keep an eye on older adults and children. Here you'll find information on preventive measures and what to do during a heat wave.

Summer is currently in full swing, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The city administration offers some simple guidelines.

Especially on particularly hot days, it’s important to listen to your body and adjust your daily routine—whenever possible—to the temperatures. Staying well-hydrated and protecting yourself from strong sunlight are key to staying healthy.

Hydration, sun protection, and looking out for older adults and children

The most important tips for hot days:

  • Stay well-hydrated (ideally by drinking water or other non-alcoholic beverages regularly throughout the day)
  • Wear light, airy, and light-colored clothing
  • Seek out shaded areas and avoid direct midday sun
  • Use sun protection—such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Opt for light, water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Elderly people, infants, and young children, as well as people with health conditions, require special attention. Family members, neighbors, and friends can help by regularly checking to see if they’re drinking enough and if they need assistance. Important: Children or pets must never be left in parked vehicles—not even for a short time.

Drinking Fountains and the Refill Initiative

Erlanger Stadtwerke operates a total of five public drinking fountains. At the

  • Neustädter Kirchplatz
  • Bohlenplatz
  • Theaterplatz, Marktplatz, and Rathausplatz

, free drinking water is available from April through October. There is also the Germany-wide “Refill” initiative. Among others, around 40 shops, clubs, cafés, and other establishments participate in it. They offer to fill your own bottle with tap water free of charge. All participating locations can be identified by the Refill sticker on the door or storefront (info: www.refill-deutschland.de).
