City adopts sustainability strategy
Stand: 01.08.2024
Commit to sustainable development and make your own measures visible.
The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly important. The 2030 Agenda adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 with its 17 global sustainability goals must also be implemented at local level at national and regional level. Municipalities play a central role here. That is why Erlangen has now joined forces with representatives from
- administration
- politics
- civil society
- science
- business
developed a sustainability strategy. The 17 global sustainability goals should be anchored in everyday municipal life.
A large number of measures are already being implemented in various fields of action without being explicitly linked to the goals. These range from climate action to issues of general interest such as wastewater disposal and early childhood education. The existing approaches to action, some of which are highlighted by the developed sustainability strategy, are correspondingly diverse.
Lord Mayor Florian Janik: "We want to make a concrete commitment to sustainable development and make our own measures visible. We take global responsibility, for example by expanding and deepening global partnerships, through our demand for ecological and fair trade products when purchasing, or through education for sustainable development."
The following areas of action were addressed in the sustainability strategy and defined with guidelines, goals and concrete approaches for implementation:
- Housing & sustainable neighborhoods
- Good work & sustainable business
- Social justice & sustainable society
- Resource conservation & climate impact adaptation
- Sustainable consumption & healthy living
- Global responsibility & one world.
The fields of action Climate Protection & Energy and Sustainable Mobility were or are the main topics in other urban processes.
In order to measure the implementation status of the sustainability strategy, measures were also formulated for each field of action with a specific implementation period:
- The existing social department store is to be developed into an attractive and modern second-hand department store by 2026
- The ErlangenPass is to be expanded to include offers for sustainable and fair trade products from 2024
- Sustainable forms of housing are to be supported from next year in the form of a housing advice center for alternative forms of housing and housing adaptation.
Sabine Bock, Environment and Climate Protection Officer: "It was particularly important to me to take concrete action and make our successes visible and measurable."
However, the measures in the sustainability strategy are not static and conclusive. They are evaluated and updated together with the Sustainability Advisory Board.
