Our archive library
Stand: 13.03.2025
The Erlangen City Archive maintains a specialized academic library - the archive library. The stock of approx. 50,000 media units consists of monographs, collected works, journals, small publications and so-called "gray literature" (e.g. private prints, company publications, congress reports), while the extensive collection of Erlangen newspapers (e.g. Intelligenz-Blatt der Stadt Erlangen, Erlanger Tagblatt, Erlanger Nachrichten) is another important part of the archive library.

The main collections of our archive library are
- Literature about Erlangen and its history (Erlangensien)
- Literature on archival science and archival education topics
- Literature on current research topics (e.g. research project on Nazi "euthanasia" in Erlangen)
- Franconian and Bavarian regional studies / regional history (Franconia and Bavarica)
- History and urban planning in general
- Ancillary historical sciences
The historically determined, decentralized arrangement of the holdings with a variety of classifications was followed by a standardized presentation according to the Regensburg Union Classification (RVK) at the reading room, seminar room and collection locations from 2012 with the move into the new archive building.
Online catalog (OPAC)
Since autumn 2019, the archive library has been a member of the Bavarian Library Network (BVB) and thus has a publicly accessible online catalog (OPAC), which will gradually replace the card catalogs and databases (only accessible to employees of the city archive) as reference tools. In the future, it will also be possible to access the journal holdings via the online journal database (ZDB).
