City history(ies): The "Kaiser Wilhelm"
Stand: 11.06.2024
The "restaurant" was founded in 1892 under the name "Café Liebel".
The "Kaiser Wilhelm", affectionately called "K.W." by many, has been trading under this name since 1908, but the enamel portrait of the emperor at the entrance was not donated until 1980. The "Restauration", as pubs were called in the 19th century, was founded in 1892 under the name "Café Liebel". From the very beginning, the pub and beer garden were a popular destination for students and professors alike, but also for the officers of the garrison, who enjoyed the green beer served here (up to 300 hectolitres a year in the 1930s).
At times, the building even belonged to the Corps Rhenania, who had their pub on the left-hand side of the first floor and often complained that the "K.W." did not observe the police curfew. In its 132-year history, it has seen a number of owners and many tenants come and go and yet it has always continued to exist. It is to be hoped that this will also be the case this time after the closure on April 27.
