“…the old Schwandneri, who turns / roughly around, as they say,” the writer cautioned in a poem published in the Erlanger Nachrichten on October 31, 1958. The occasion was a debate in the city council about moving the weekly market to Theaterplatz to create more space for cars and traffic on Marktplatz.

“Schwandneri,” a market vendor from Erlangen whose posthumous horror he presumed, had already been dead for eight years at that point. More about this apparently quite prominent fruit vendor and other “colorful characters” can currently be learned at the exhibition “From the Field to the Table: 650 Years of the Market in Erlangen” at the City Archives. For over forty years, Maria Schwandner also stood at the weekly market, come rain or shine. Feared for her quick wit, she wouldn’t let anyone take advantage of her. But she showed her kind heart to anyone in need or facing difficulties. “Children, come out into the field and take a little fruit with you,” she is said to have told soldiers marching through the market on their way to the front.
