2024 Anniversary: 650 Years of the Market in Erlangen.
In 1374, Emperor Charles IV granted the city of Erlangen the right to hold a weekly market. In addition, an annual fair was permitted twice a year—an important prerequisite for a town’s development into a city. Starting in 1692, the Neustadt district held a weekly market on what is now Hugenottenplatz. Starting in 1694, two annual fairs were held, which were consolidated into a single event on Pentecost in 1810.
