Urban greenery on the move in terms of pruning
Stand: 25.10.2024
One of the aims is to promote the most natural growth possible in free-growing hedges. The work only takes place outside the statutory bird protection period between October 1 and February 29.
What is being done?
The City Green Department is currently carrying out extensive pruning of hedges and groups of trees throughout Erlangen. Depending on the condition, location and function of the wooded areas, between 20 and 50 percent of the trees and shrubs are left as they are. These pruning measures are required every five to ten years. Priority is given to work that is necessary to maintain road safety. Visibility lines are cleared and deadwood, dead trees, stumps and shrubs are removed. This hedge and shrub pruning only takes place outside the statutory bird protection period between October 1 and February 29.
Why is pruning carried out?
The aim is also to encourage free-growing hedges to grow as naturally as possible. In most cases, there is hardly any sign of the pruning work after just two years. The plants sprout again very quickly due to the incoming light.
The areas to be worked on are reported throughout the year by green keepers, citizens and other departments. The responsible city green department then inspects the respective areas. It then determines what should remain and what needs to be removed. This year, the list includes around 110 different areas.
