30 km/h speed limit to be significantly extended

Stand: 12.01.2026

This is made possible by the updated road traffic regulations. City focuses on greater safety for children and young people as well as noticeably reducing congestion on particularly affected roads.

The City Council's Environment, Transport and Planning Committee (UVPA) has approved a comprehensive concept for extending 30 km/h speed limits in the city. The city is thus making use of new possibilities in the road traffic regulations to be able to more easily order 30 km/h zones in urban areas.

The aim of the concept is a systematic, legally compliant and gradual expansion of the 30 km/h speed limit - with a clear focus on greater safety for children and young people as well as noticeable relief for particularly affected streets. Mayor Florian Janik emphasizes: "With the new regulations, we will specifically improve the protection of schoolchildren and at the same time reduce traffic noise in residential areas. This is an important step towards improving the quality of life in our city."

New legal options

The updated road traffic regulations will allow

  • Gap closures of up to 500 meters between existing 30 km/h speed limits
  • 30 km/h at crosswalks
  • 30 km/h on highly frequented school routes. In Erlangen, the speed limits will apply from Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Kindergartens are not subject to this regulation, as young children are generally under the supervision of their parents.

Additional measures and checks

The legal options for ordering crosswalks have also been relaxed. At the same time, the city is therefore examining whether new crosswalks can be installed at other locations - including Hartmannstraße and George-Marshall-Platz. Once implemented, a 30 km/h speed limit would also be possible there. In addition, further streets are to be connected to existing 30 km/h zones, including

  • Schuhstraße
  • Parts of Nürnberger Straße
  • Artilleriestraße
  • Ebrardstraße
  • Frankenwaldallee / Odenwaldallee

Scope of the planned changes

The approved concept includes the following extensions:

  • 6.4 km of new routes in existing 30 km/h zones
  • 4.1 km of new all-day 30 km/h routes
  • 8.4 km of new temporary 30 km/h sections
  • 2.7 km on which the speed limit will be reduced from 60 km/h to 50 km/h

In addition, tests for additional noise protection regulations are still underway. So far, only Pfarrstraße has been included; further results are expected by 2026.

Implementation in several stages

The measures will be implemented in stages, starting at St. Mark's Church (Drausnick-/Kurt-Schumacher-/Sieglitzhofer Straße):

Highly frequented school routes

  • Highest priority, mandatory implementation - traffic regulations 2026/2027
  • Subsequent structural implementation by the civil engineering department

New crosswalks

  • Examination of requirements such as traffic figures and lighting
  • Parallel processing by mobility planning and traffic authority

Extension of 30 km/h zones

  • Not mandatory, but makes sense from an urban planning perspective
  • High costs due to removal of traffic lights, guidelines and cycle path regulations
  • Implementation planned in the medium term due to limited budget funds

Special individual cases

For some areas, no 30 km/h zones are possible or planned:

  • The entrance to the Waldorf School (Äußere Tennenloher Straße): lies outside the built-up area
  • Bunsenstraße, Koldestraße, Mönaustraße: according to the school route plan, no bundling of school routes
  • Möhrendorfer Straße: after completion of the canal bridge, the temporary regulation will end; a temporary reduction is planned for the future.
