VAG_Rad: The product line will be further expanded

The VAG_Rad service in Erlangen is being expanded: To make the bike-sharing system even more widely available throughout the city, stations that are no longer needed to the same extent within the well-served Flexzone will be specifically repurposed in the future to expand the service outside the Flexzone.

For example, the existing VAG_Rad station at Neuer Markt/Rathaus will be relocated to Alterlangen St. Johann. Starting in early September, VAG_Rad bikes will also be available for rental and return at the corner of St. Johann and Möhrendorfer Straße.
The downtown area is already very well connected to the VAG_Rad system through the Flexzone. By relocating selected stations, additional areas of the city can now be specifically served, and the service there can be improved. This makes the bike-sharing system even more flexible and better aligned with actual demand.

The new location in Alterlangen also addresses a frequently expressed request from residents. The Office of Urban Planning and Mobility has received several inquiries regarding better connectivity between the neighborhood and the VAG_Rad system.

The City of Erlangen is thus pursuing the goal of gradually expanding the VAG_Rad service and creating an attractive, environmentally friendly, and flexible alternative to motorized private transportation. By strategically relocating stations, the existing infrastructure can be deployed where it is most needed.

The VAG_Rad system continues to enjoy great popularity in Erlangen: In the first half of 2026, the number of rentals rose by 57 percent compared to the same period last year, and the number of customers increased by 40 percent. In total, approximately 77,000 rentals were recorded in Erlangen during the first six months. July 2026 set a new record: with approximately 32,000 rentals, it was the most successful month since the system’s introduction in Erlangen.
