When the Forest Burns: Danger Increases with Climate Change

Stand: 13.07.2026

How to Behave in the Woods. As part of its “Preparing for Crises and Disasters” information series, the City of Erlangen provides monthly updates on various topics related to hazard prevention.

As a result of climate change, dry summers are becoming increasingly common—in recent years, Germany has also experienced periods with no precipitation lasting several weeks or months. Against this backdrop, the risk of wildfires is also rising. Currently, the German Weather Service’s hazard index for the region around Erlangen is at level 4 out of 5.

This poses challenges for fire departments nationwide. The city’s Office for Fire and Disaster Protection began preparing for this more than ten years ago. In the case of wildfires, particular attention must be paid to wind conditions.

How to Stay Safe in the Woods

Residents should take special care not to light open fires or barbecue in the forest or nearby (within 100 meters). A smoking ban is in effect in forests from March 1 through October 31. Due to hot catalytic converters, cars can start fires in meadows or fields. And important for the fire department: Access roads and paths into forests must be kept clear at all times. Anyone who notices smoke should immediately call 112 and describe the location as best as possible. If you are at the scene, you can guide the fire department to the location.
