Central Cemetery

At the end of the 19th century, what is now the Central Cemetery was established southwest of Erlangen, just outside the city limits. During the Industrial Revolution, the population grew to such an extent that the three existing church cemeteries, as well as the first municipal cemetery—now known as the Cemetery of Honor—were no longer sufficient. This marked the beginning of today’s Central Cemetery, which has been expanded several times over the years.

The grounds are partially enclosed by the cemetery wall, which, together with the mortuaries, the funeral halls, the viewing room, and the entrance gate, is a designated historic landmark. There are still 226 war grave crosses here commemorating the soldiers who fell in World War I and World War II. The Central Cemetery is Erlangen’s largest burial ground.
