Creation of a memorial to the victims of euthanasia

Following the development of a framework concept and an urban and open-space planning competition, a feasibility study was conducted in 2024–2025. As part of a joint research project, the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) and the Erlangen City Archives have been investigating the events at the sanatorium and nursing home from 1933 to 1945 since 2019. The findings and ideas gathered will be incorporated into the creation of the memorial site. The City of Erlangen, FAU, and the University Hospital will steer the project and, drawing on national and international expertise, bring it to the point where it is ready for exhibition in the coming years. In October 2025, the founding office began its work. At the same time, preparations are underway to establish a foundation.

The timeline will be finalized as a concept for the memorial site is developed.

As part of the process, a “Forum on the Erlangen Sanatorium and Nursing Home: A Place of Remembrance and the Future” was established in 2020. In addition to various interest groups, interested citizens are also represented here. The forum holds public meetings. Throughout the process, discussion and information events are also held.
