Creating a place of remembrance for the victims of euthanasia
Stand: 08.04.2024
Together with various project partners, a place of remembrance and future is to be established on the site of the former Erlangen sanatorium and nursing home (HuPfla).
Informationen
A framework concept for the memorial and future location is available. In 2022/2023, an urban and open space planning ideas competition was also held and prizes awarded. As part of a joint research project, the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) and the Erlangen City Archives are investigating the events at the sanatorium and nursing home between 1933 and 1945. The project is divided into two phases (start of the first phase in 2019 - completion of the second phase expected in 2025). The collected findings and ideas will be incorporated into the realization of the memorial site.
The City of Erlangen, FAU and the University Hospital will manage the project with national and international expertise over the coming years until it is ready for exhibition. A joint coordination office is currently being prepared. The establishment of a foundation is being prepared in parallel.
The time frame will be concretized with the development of a concept for the memorial site.
Competition: 200,000 euros
Research project: project phase 1 117,000 euros, project phase 2 150,000 euros
Concept consolidation and coordination office (pro rata financing): 79,000 euros
To accompany the process, a "Forum Erinnerungs- und Zukunftsort Heil- und Pflegeanstalt Erlangen" was founded in 2020. In addition to various interest groups, interested citizens are also represented here. The forum meets in public. Discussion and information events are held throughout the duration of the process.
