Renovation and Expansion of the City Museum

The City Museum, located in the heart of the Old Town, showcases the history of the Erlangen region from its earliest days to the present-day university city. The City Council has decided that, following the completion of the kubic project, its next priority will be to focus on expanding the City Museum.

An expansion and renovation are intended to meet the increased space requirements of a modern city museum. There is a lack of larger spaces for special exhibitions, dedicated event rooms, and expanded space for the permanent exhibition on the city’s history. Based on an initial analysis of the buildings and spaces from a museum perspective, a museum master plan was completed in the first half of 2023. This master plan serves both as the basis for the terms of reference of an architectural competition (including future space requirements, the spatial program, and key operational needs) and for the ongoing development of the museum’s conceptual framework and the new permanent exhibition in the coming years.
Due to the current tight budget situation, plans to create a museum quarter around the City Museum will not be pursued for the time being.
