If you want to slaughter, cut and process a pig from the restricted zones or store the meat and meat products during an outbreak of African swine fever, you must apply for the designation of the establishment.

African swine fever is a category A animal disease and therefore must be controlled. Susceptible are with us the domestic pig and the wild boar. For humans, the disease is not dangerous. However, it can cause considerable damage in pig herds. For pigs, the infection is fatal in the vast majority of cases. The virus persists for months, particularly in meat and meat products, and remains contagious.
Once African swine fever has broken out, various exclusion zones are established.
- In the case of the outbreak in domestic pigs:
- restricted zone III
. It includes the protection zone with a radius of at least 3 km around the outbreak site and the surveillance zone with a radius of at least 10 km around the outbreak site. - If necessary, restricted zone I
. It connects to the outside of the exclusion zone III.
- restricted zone III
- In the case of the outbreak in wild boar:
- restricted zone II
. It includes the infected zone. This is defined with a radius of about 15 km around the place where the infected wild boar was found. - Barrier Zone I
. This is defined with a radius of approximately 45 km around the outbreak site.
- restricted zone II
A designation is required for
.- the direct slaughter of pigs kept in restricted zones II and III
- the cutting, processing and storage of fresh meat and meat products, including animal intestinal casings, obtained from pigs kept in restricted zones II and III
- the dressing of wild game and the processing and storage of fresh meat and meat products from wild game pigs, obtained in restricted zones I, II and III
- the dressing of wild game and the processing and storage of the fresh meat and meat products of wild boar, provided that they are located in restricted zones I, II and III
Exceptions are possible for
.- Cutting plants
- Processing plants
- Storage plants
Exemptions are granted by the relevant county administrative authorities for establishments not approved under food law. For establishments approved under food law, the competent government or the Bavarian Control Authority for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs grants the exemption.
- Constructional and / or organizational requirements for the separation of live pigs from differently regulated restricted zones
- Constructional and / or organizational requirements for the separation of commodity flows
- Ensuring traceability and traceability of supply chains
- Existence of an emergency concept
- Where applicable, facilities for risk-reducing treatment
Applications must be submitted with attachments to the relevant district administrative authority (veterinary office).
After preliminary examination and plausibility check, the applications are forwarded to the respective government.
