A certificate of no impediment to marriage is a document issued by the competent German civil registry office for the purpose of getting married abroad, which lists both fiancés. It certifies that, under German law, there are no known impediments to the intended marriage.
To apply for a certificate of no impediment to marriage, at least one of the fiancés must be a German citizen. In addition, the same requirements apply as for registering to get married:
- Both of you must be of legal age.
- You may not be related in a direct line of descent, nor may you be full or half-siblings.
- If you have previously been married or in a registered partnership, the previous marriage or partnership must have been dissolved.
Please be sure to check with the relevant civil registry office in advance regarding the required documents. They will be happy to advise you.
