Archival records are all documents of archival value—including the tools necessary for their use—that have been generated by government agencies, courts, and other public bodies, or by natural persons or legal entities under private law. Records primarily include files, documents, and other individual written materials; maps; plans; images, film, and audio material; other data carriers; and files, including the software necessary for their analysis. Archival records also include supplementary documentation collected by the archives.
Access to an archive generally takes place through in-person consultation of finding aids, archival records, and reproductions on the premises of the archives. Archives may also facilitate access by responding to written and oral inquiries. The information provided here may be limited to references to relevant archival materials.
