Passport; Reporting a Lost Passport and Its Recovery
If your German passport is missing or has been lost, you must report the loss. If you find the document later, you must also report this.

If your passport or temporary passport is lost, you are required to report this immediately to the passport office in your municipality (of residence).
You must also notify the passport office if the document is found. Since a new document is usually issued in such cases, this is essential. In addition, it is recommended that you apply for a new passport to prevent any issues when using it.
If a criminal offense is suspected, contact your local police station (see “Reporting a Crime to the Police; Filing a Report” under “Related Topics”).
Failure to report the loss to the passport office, or failure to do so in a timely manner, constitutes an administrative offense that may be punishable by a fine.
Even if you report the passport as found, foreign authorities may not recognize a passport reported as found for use in their country or may confiscate it. Therefore, it is recommended that you apply for a new passport in the event of loss or theft.

You can handle passport and ID matters at the Citizen Services office located on the ground floor of City Hall. Here, for example, you can obtain passports, ID cards, children’s passports, and temporary documents, etc.
