The industrial mechanic is a mono-occupation, which means that you do not specialize in a particular field. All trainees therefore receive the same basic training and can later be employed in any specialist area. In the drainage company of the city of Erlangen, you will perform important public tasks and work actively for the citizens in environmental protection.
As an industrial mechanic, you will manufacture assemblies for machines and production facilities, set them up or modify them. You will monitor and optimize the production process. You will also take care of repair and maintenance work on operating equipment and technical systems and select test equipment, determine the causes of faults, replace defective components or wearing parts, check bearings or tighten screws, for example. In some cases, you will manufacture any necessary spare parts yourself.
During your training, you will also be introduced to various other areas, such as pneumatics, hydraulics, basic electrical engineering, quality management and the documentation of your work processes. You will gain an insight into welding (including plastic welding PE) and soldering as well as cutting and machining materials. You will support your colleagues in planning and organizing work processes, taking into account occupational safety, health protection and compliance with the necessary environmental protection measures.
You will gain a comprehensive insight into all areas of the profession during your training and will find that your tasks are very diverse and varied both during and after your training. As a trained specialist, you can also expect various in-depth training courses that will further qualify you for your work as an industrial mechanic. These include, for example, fastening technician and crane operator. Further specific training on certain systems and machines as well as the safety rules for handling hazardous substances round off your training.

To train as an industrial mechanic, you must meet the following requirements:
- You have at least a qualifying secondary school leaving certificate or have obtained one by the start of the recruitment process
- You successfully participate in the recruitment process of the city of Erlangen
In addition, you should have an easy understanding of technical contexts. Thanks to your manual skills, you will be able to assemble equipment smoothly. You have good hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. At school, you were already interested in subjects such as physics and mathematics. You approach your work conscientiously and carefully to avoid mistakes and accidents. You demonstrate your ability to work in a team with your colleagues.
Industrial mechanic is a recognized profession according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The dual training program at the City of Erlangen lasts 3.5 years. It is divided into theoretical training at the vocational school and practical training at the drainage company of the City of Erlangen.
In addition, the training is supplemented by inter-company courses and additional courses, e.g. at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) with various key topics.
The training can be shortened by six months in the case of particularly good performance.
Theoretical training
The theoretical training takes place in the form of block lessons at the Herzogenaurach State Vocational School Center. Here you will learn subject-specific content and build up the theoretical basis for your practical work. The specialist lessons are mainly organized in modules so that the learning fields are taught one after the other.
You can expect the following modules, among others, in the course of your training:
- Production engineering
- Automation technology
- Components
- Maintenance
Before the end of the second year of training, you will take the first part of your final examination. In addition to a technical task and a technical discussion, this also includes written examination tasks.
The second part of the final examination follows at the end of the apprenticeship. This consists of several components. The practical examination is an operational assignment or a supra-regional practical task, which is followed by a technical discussion. There is also an order and function analysis, in which existing problems are to be identified and solved. Production engineering is about planning and implementing the manufacture of technical systems. The last module is economics and social studies, in which the connections between the world of work and the economy are examined.

Practical vocational training
The practical part of your training will mainly take place at the drainage company of the city of Erlangen. During your training, you will be introduced to the various areas of responsibility and systematically familiarized with the job content. You will have the opportunity to apply, consolidate and deepen what you have learned at vocational school.
For example, you will learn how to create and evaluate work plans and technical drawings and can put this knowledge into practice in the production of components. The assembly of components and technical systems relating to the sewage treatment plant, pumping stations and stormwater overflow basins will also be part of your practical tasks. In addition to installation, the maintenance and repair of machines and systems is also an important area of responsibility as an industrial mechanic, which you will be introduced to as part of your practical training. During your theoretical training, you will also be immersed in areas of electrical engineering that will enable you to analyze circuit diagrams and rectify minor faults in practice.
During your practical training, you will be supervised by competent trainers who will give you an insight into the various tasks and everyday life as an industrial mechanic and gradually give you the opportunity to take on these tasks independently.
A healthy feedback culture is a top priority at the City of Erlangen: you will receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses so that you always know how you can actively develop further in order to improve and expand your skills.
During your training, you will receive a monthly training allowance (gross)
- in the 1st year in the amount of € 1,218.26
- in the 2nd year in the amount of € 1,268.20
- in the 3rd year in the amount of € 1,314.02
As a trainee of the City of Erlangen, you are also entitled to capital-forming benefits of €13.29 per month and a special annual payment ("Christmas bonus").
After successfully completing your final examination, you can also expect a final bonus of €400.
The training allowance is based on the collective agreement for trainees in the public sector (TVAöD).

After training, remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD). The classification and thus also the remuneration are based on the job that is taken on. The performance principle applies. The law therefore stipulates certain classification criteria. If an employee holds a position and fulfills all job characteristics, the classification is made according to the previously determined job evaluation.
The starting salary is currently € 2,683.45 (gross) in the regular pay group EG 6, level 1.
In addition, you will also receive capital-forming benefits of € 6.65 per month and a special payment ("Christmas bonus"). You can also expect regular salary increases and performance-related steps.

As part of the training, all fees are paid by the City of Erlangen. Training materials required for vocational training and for taking the exam (e.g. work and protective clothing, textbooks or exam preparation booklets) are also provided free of charge. In addition, you will receive a grant of €50 for learning materials in each year of training.
A company laptop is also provided for use during the training period.
Travel costs for journeys to external vocational schools will be reimbursed if they exceed 6 percent of the training allowance, unless there is no other entitlement to compensation. If accommodation in a hall of residence is also necessary, the costs incurred will also be reimbursed by the City of Erlangen.
In the case of inter-company training courses and events that take place outside the company, you will also be reimbursed for travel expenses. If an overnight stay at the event location is required, the City of Erlangen will also cover the costs for accommodation and meals.
All social benefits that the city administration of Erlangen offers its employees naturally also apply to our junior staff.
Anyone who regularly travels to work by public transport receives a monthly travel allowance from the City of Erlangen. During their training, junior employees can purchase the Bavarian discount ticket (€29 ticket). The costs incurred for this are reimbursed in full by the City of Erlangen upon application. However, it is also possible (depending on availability) to apply for a municipal employee parking space.
As part of the company's health management program, there are regular sports courses and other health-promoting activities that you can take part in.
The number of trainees is based on the anticipated personnel requirements. The City of Erlangen offers a guarantee of employment to high-performing junior staff.
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be entitled to use the job title "Industrial Mechanic".
You will be employed in the drainage company, where you will have your service base in the workshop together with your colleagues. As an industrial mechanic, you will also work outdoors a lot, for example when inspecting and maintaining the outdoor facilities.
Training is the first step in continuous personnel development. A varied and high-quality training program is offered for further professional qualification. The aim of these qualifications is to keep your knowledge up to date so that you can perform your job successfully and in a goal-oriented manner and expand your personal skills.
As a skilled worker, you have access to job-specific further training and can acquire additional skills such as certified fastening technician, forklift, construction machinery and crane operator or, for example, a BE driving license.
Employees have extensive career development and promotion opportunities. In the medium term, you will have the opportunity to train as a master craftsman/technician.
