Demolition of the old parking garage at the large parking lot

Stand: 29.01.2025

On Monday, February 24, demolition work will begin on the dilapidated multi-storey parking lot at the large parking lot in Parkplatzstraße. The aim is to create 255 regular parking spaces and four barrier-free parking spaces at this location by the fall - exactly as many as could last be used in the parking garage.

Sustainable recycling of demolition materials

The construction site will take up a larger area, as the demolition materials will be inspected on site for harmful substances, separated and processed into recycled building material. This recycled material will be used directly to fill the excavation pit. In this way, the city is taking a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.

Delay due to re-awarding of the contract

The demolition was originally scheduled for last year. However, delays occurred due to disagreements with the contracted company, which is why the contract had to be re-awarded.

Restrictions during the construction work

On the northern part of the large parking lot, parking field 4 (P4), up to 215 parking spaces will probably have to be removed during the construction work. However, the city is working on reducing the construction site area as soon as possible in order to minimize restrictions. In addition, the parking lot road along the parking garage in the direction of the tannery will be closed from February 24. However, the large parking lot will remain accessible via Münchener Straße. Once the demolition and backfilling of the excavation pit has been completed, the area will be prepared for parking at ground level.

Alternative options for parkers

The surrounding parking garages and underground garages in Henkestraße, Schuhstraße and Sedanstraße offer free capacity throughout the day. In addition, 55 previously rented parking spaces are once again available to the public on the large parking lot itself. Particularly practical: all parking facilities are located in the free city center area, where bus transport can be used free of charge.

Further information on the parking facilities and the free bus service can be found at www.erlangen.de/innenstadt-kostenlos.
