Large parking lot: parking lot road closed, demolition begins
Stand: 19.02.2025
The demolition of the dilapidated parking garage at the large parking lot will begin on Monday, February 24. From then on, the parking lot road along the parking garage in the direction of Gerberei will also be closed. However, the large parking lot will remain accessible via Münchener Straße.
By the fall, around 255 regular parking spaces and four barrier-free parking spaces are to be created on the site. This corresponds to the last usable capacity of the parking garage. The work will require a larger area for the construction site facilities.
The demolition materials will be tested on site for harmful substances in accordance with legal requirements, separated and then processed into recycled building material. This will be used sustainably to backfill the excavation pit directly on site. The demolition was originally planned for last year. However, disagreements with the contracted company led to delays and a re-tendering of the contract.
During the work, up to 215 parking spaces in parking area 4 (P4) in the northern section of the large parking lot will probably have to be removed by the end of May. The city will endeavor to reduce the size of the construction site as soon as possible, as soon as the progress of the work allows. Once the demolition and backfilling of the excavation pit has been completed, the area will be prepared for parking at ground level.
The surrounding parking garages and underground garages, such as those in Henkestraße, Schuhstraße and Sedanstraße, offer free capacity throughout the day. In the large parking lot north of Neustädter Friedhof between Friedrich-List- and Münchener Straße, 55 previously rented parking spaces are also available to the public again. All parking spaces are located in the free city center area, where buses can be used free of charge.
