International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women*

November 25 marks the annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women*. It was established by the United Nations with the aim of strengthening the protection of girls* and women* from violence and promoting their human rights. “Look! Speak up! Take action!”—this motto remains more relevant than ever.
Gender-based and domestic violence are not marginal phenomena; the numbers are rising year after year. It primarily affects women*, queer people, and children, regardless of their background, age, income, or level of education. Violence violates fundamental and human rights; it affects health and destroys relationships and lives. And yet it is often downplayed, concealed, or framed as an individual issue, rather than being identified as a structural problem in our society.
It manifests itself in unequal power dynamics at work, within families, in institutions, and increasingly in the digital sphere as well. Sexist “jokes,” verbal abuse, humiliation, control, economic dependence, stalking, threats, and physical violence are expressions of these structures and make one thing clear: gender-based and domestic violence do not arise in a vacuum.
To prevent and stop this, we all need to do our part.
Taking responsibility can start with small steps:
Pay attention if something seems off in the stairwell, on the street, online, or anywhere else.
Speak up if you hear sexist, anti-LGBTQ+, or violence-trivializing remarks—even among friends or family.
Get involved by taking those affected seriously, listening to them, offering support, or advocating for awareness and protection.
In keeping with this motto, initiatives, institutions, and the City of Erlangen’s Office for Gender Equality organize a diverse program every year leading up to November 25. This year’s offerings and events once again demonstrate that prevention, protection, awareness-raising, and empowerment are possible when we collectively support, demand, and further develop them.
