International Day against Violence against Women

Stand: 18.11.2024

The International Day against Violence against Women takes place on November 25 - Event program 2024.

The figures for domestic violence in Germany rose significantly in 2023. The perpetrators are mostly male, the victims female. This is the fifth year in a row in which it has become clear that there is still a problem of gender-specific violence in Germany. The statistics show:
  • Two out of three women experience sexual harassment and one in seven are victims of sexualized violence. But: There is no right to sex!
  • The home is the most dangerous place for women: 70.5% of all victims of domestic violence are female.
  • 155 women were killed by their (ex-)partners in 2023. But: people don't kill for love.
  • Violence is male: 75.6% of perpetrators are men.

These figures alone only represent the bright field, i.e. the known cases, and are already alarming. The thought that the number of unreported cases is presumably much higher and that so many people experience violence in their everyday lives should be shocking. Reality shows: The power relationship between the sexes is so deeply entrenched that violence is seen as the norm. The Istanbul Convention, the Council of Europe's international convention on the prevention of violence against women and domestic violence, came into force in Germany in 2018. Nevertheless, experts continue to conclude that the measures to protect against violence are not being adequately implemented in Germany. We should no longer accept this, because violence is a human rights violation and women*, children, queer people and ultimately other men suffer the consequences.

As the city of Erlangen, together with Erlangen groups and committed individuals, we oppose all forms of violence against women, queer people and children. We have therefore put together a multi-layered program to mark 25 November. We want to draw attention to the violence and provide information on approaches to counteract it.

You can find all the events in the program at the bottom of this page or in the city of Erlangen's calendar of events.

There is a short report in the city newspaper "Rathausplatz 1 - November 2024 issue".
