Storing building materials safely
Stand: 28.04.2026
The removal of blockages causes considerable costs. Contractors and building owners can be held liable.
What it's all about
During construction work on public roads and squares, large quantities of sand, gravel, lime and cement are repeatedly washed into the sewer system. This is due to
- inappropriate storage of building materials or
- the unfavorable position of construction machinery.
Rainwater inlets and sewer pipes have repeatedly been completely or partially blocked by washed-in building materials. Clearing such blockages incurs considerable costs.
What to bear in mind
The drainage company asks all building contractors and building owners:
- Ensure that wash-in of building materials into the sewer system is avoided with certainty
- Manholes and rainwater inlets located in the immediate vicinity of construction sites must be covered with sheet metal; paved gutters must always be kept clean of sand and debris.
If the discharge of building materials causes sewer blockages, contractors and building owners must be held liable for the costs incurred.
All of this also applies to swales and ditches in the area of modified mixing systems, such as in Büchenbach.
