Wastewater treatment plant: Foundation stone laid for 4th purification stage
Stand: 11.11.2024
The foundation stone for the 4th purification stage was laid on Thursday on the site of the sewage treatment plant - the municipal drainage company - in Bayreuther Strasse.
Mayor Florian Janik also welcomed Bavaria's Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber to the launch of the innovative expansion phase on October 17. Two more gas storage facilities are to be built by 2026. From 2027, Erlangen will be the first major city in Bavaria with a fourth purification stage - and it will be energy-neutral.
What are the benefits of the 4th purification stage?
Retrofitting larger wastewater treatment plants with fourth treatment stages is part of the Bavarian "Water Future Bavaria 2050" program. Wastewater treatment in sewage treatment plants takes place in three stages using mechanical, biological and chemical processes. However, it still contains a large number of trace substances. These originate, for example, from pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, cleaning agents and other household and industrial chemicals. The purification performance for such substances can be improved by an additional fourth purification stage. The Erlangen wastewater treatment plant is already one of the most modern of its kind and is one of the 13 plants that enjoy the highest priority due to their size and water management criteria.
Funding from the Free State of Bavaria
The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the construction of the fourth purification stage for the elimination of trace substances in Erlangen with up to 15 million euros. After the sewage treatment plant was commissioned in 1957, it was converted into one of the most modern plants in Europe over the course of time. For example, sewage sludge drying with phosphorus recovery was put into operation in 2023. The aim is to use the sewage sludge as a substitute fuel in the region. The 4th treatment stage is to be built in three phases by 2026. This will include the construction of two additional gas storage tanks, the extension and conversion of the existing wastewater filter and the roofing of the aeration tank system with a photovoltaic system.
Energy neutrality by 2027
The Erlangen wastewater treatment plant already complies with many of the standards of the new Urban Wastewater Directive, which was passed by the EU Parliament this year. One of the regulations is the energy neutrality of municipal wastewater treatment plants by 2045. However, the Erlangen wastewater treatment plant will already reach this stage in 2027 with the commissioning of the fourth treatment stage.
