Almost 50,000 trees in the urban area - tree sponsorships welcome
Stand: 15.08.2024
The city green department counts a total of 21,960 individually recorded trees and around 28,000 trees in tree groups in the city area.
Due to the increasingly frequent periods of heat and drought, plants in inner-city areas have very difficult site conditions. In principle, they have to be watered and cared for constantly during the summer months. The "Tree and green sponsorship" project has been running for several years. Citizens can take on regular watering, for example, with a sponsorship. There are currently around 160 such sponsors. We replant - what is important here
When planting new trees, the City Green Department ensures that the young trees can cope with the expected climatic changes. The decisive factor in creating climate-resilient locations is the preparation of the tree site:
- Urban trees require at least 12 square meters of root space (three by three meter tree slice). This brings the additional advantage of a sponge city. The substrate used can absorb water quickly and thus serve as a precaution in the event of heavy rainfall.
- The biggest limiting factors are competing users of the substrate for infrastructure and car traffic. Excavations and construction work in the root and crown area are problematic for old trees.
Last year, 153 trees had to be felled. The reason for this was a lack of road safety.
