Municipal Heating Plan Approved

Stand: 23.07.2026

It includes an analysis of the current situation, an assessment of future needs, the potential for using renewable energy, and ways to improve energy efficiency.

At its January meeting, the City Council adopted the Municipal Heating Plan (KWP). It serves as an extension of the Municipal Energy Use Plan (ENP), which was already adopted in May of last year. The KWP serves as a strategic tool for municipalities to holistically plan heat demand and heat supply at the local level. The goal is a sustainable and cost-effective heat supply. Under the Heat Planning Act, the development and adoption of a KWP is mandatory for all municipalities and must be finalized by June 30, 2026.

Contents of the Heat Plan

The plan includes an analysis of the current situation, an assessment of future demand, the potential for using renewable energy, and measures to improve energy efficiency. For residents, the plan provides initial guidance: Where is the construction or expansion of local and district heating networks generally possible in the future? Which neighborhoods are suitable for the construction of new, smaller heating networks? For which buildings are decentralized solutions, such as heat pumps, necessary? And where is further clarification needed in the medium term?

Advice and Support from the City

Experts from the city administration are available to answer specific questions about heating planning. The City of Erlangen offers free and independent advice on topics such as heating system upgrades, energy-efficient building renovations, sustainable new construction, photovoltaic systems, and funding opportunities. Further information is available at www.erlangen.de/energie. Public Presentation of the Heating Plan

For anyone interested, the KWP will be presented in detail once again on February 2 at 6:00 p.m. as part of a public dialogue. The digital event also offers the opportunity to ask questions. [Registration link]
