Mayor Florian Janik:
"The targeted destruction of vital infrastructure (electricity, heat, water) by attacks of the Russian army hits more and more Ukrainian cities. On December 2, 2022, I had the opportunity to speak via video conference with Larissa Vinogradova, the social mayor of Browary, and get first-hand information about the situation. Browary, with which Erlangen together with Jena has had a solidarity partnership since September, is also increasingly affected by the attacks on civil infrastructure. There are outages of electricity, water and district heating for hours, which has a particularly bad effect on schools and hospitals.
Together with the twin city of Jena, we are now looking for ways to support the people there wherever possible. The city of 100,000 inhabitants has to mobilize all its forces to get its own population through the winter, and Browary is also home to around 20,000 internally displaced persons. By way of comparison, we in Erlangen are currently offering shelter to about 1,500 Ukrainians. From the combat zones one expects now over the winter further flight movements, for which Browary wants to prepare itself with the establishment of a housing container village, where first about 350 humans are to find a temporary accommodation.
Together with Thomas Nitzsche, mayor of the twin city Jena, I ask therefore all citizens of Erlangen to continue to show solidarity with the people in the Ukraine, and to support the project "LichtER for Ukraine" with a donation. Thanks to your help, we will purchase and deliver the necessary equipment and furnishings for the containers - from kitchen blocks to washing machines - in Germany or locally in Ukraine in consultation with Browary.
Erlangen has already proven time and again in the past how generous and sustainable we help in crisis situations. For this we received a lot of thanks and recognition. I am therefore once again confident that I will be able to win you over to support this project, and I thank you most sincerely in advance."
