New paths for parking traffic in the city center

Stand: 28.05.2024

In principle, parking traffic should be directed to the large parking lot and the private parking garages.

At its November meeting, the city council passed a new regulation on parking fees. The aim is to relieve the city center of unnecessary parking search traffic. Drivers are to be better steered by changing parking fees.

"Cars take up a lot of space in cities. We need to reorganize the scarce public space and distribute it more fairly in order to meet the many different needs of residents, traders or visitors, cyclists or pedestrians." (Urban planning officer Harald Lang)

In principle, parking traffic should be directed to the large parking lot and the private parking garages. From there, commuters and visitors will be able to reach their destinations in the city center on foot or conveniently using the free City Line. This line connects as a ring line

  • the large parking lot
  • various parking garages
  • central points such as the university hospitals, the arcades
  • the northern city center.

We have thus created a future-proof and sustainable transport service that makes it easy for all citizens and commuters in particular to reach their workplace," says Janik.

Until now, the fees for parking in public areas have been very low compared to parking garages. This is set to change from March 2024. The actual steering effect of parking traffic is to be achieved by increasing the charges. In order to increase the frequency of parking in the city center, the fees will be set at the legally permitted maximum amount of 2.60 euros per hour. The fee for the large parking lot is set at a significantly lower 1.50 euros per hour.

"In this way, we want to ensure that the city center is only used by those who absolutely have to go there. The shorter parking dwell times will also benefit retailers close to the city center in particular." (Lord Mayor Florian Janik)
