Bicycle parking
Stand: 06.02.2025
The "Transport Development and Mobility Plan 2030" and the "Bicycle City of the Future Plan" state that the number of bicycle parking spaces in Erlangen will be greatly increased in the coming years in order to promote cycling.
The expansion of attractive and secure parking facilities for cyclists is an important element in promoting cycling in Erlangen. Parking facilities help to make cycling more attractive. Because if you know your bike is easily accessible and safely parked, you are more likely to use it. However, parking facilities are not only a great benefit for cyclists, but also for pedestrians: properly parked bikes increase the quality of life in a place, paths are kept clear, making them barrier-free and safe.
The creation of bicycle parking facilities therefore promotes future-proof, space-saving, sustainable and cost-effective mobility. The city of Erlangen is committed to both large facilities at central points (e.g. at train stations) and the widespread construction of small facilities. Current projects are presented in the drop-down menu.
This project involves the widespread installation of new metal racks for leaning bicycles in order to prevent "wild parking". A block of five bike racks takes up the same space as a single car parking space. It often makes sense to set up two or three blocks of five, which are usually supplemented by one to three special cargo bike racks. With the help of the city's population, over 250 locations in the city center where citizens wanted parking facilities were collected for the 1000-rack program. You can always view the current implementation status on our online map .
This recipe for success was extended to the rest of the city in early summer 2022: all citizens were once again able to submit individual location suggestions. Many of the suggestions have already been implemented and can be successively implemented in the coming years.
The smooth and fast transfer from bike to train is an important factor in strengthening the environmental network. After a few hours or even days of absence, the bike should not only be able to be found again, but should also be waiting at the station undamaged. They also need to be parked quickly and conveniently so that they can easily catch the train. To ensure this, the city of Erlangen has created or increased up to 300 partially covered bicycle parking facilities at the stations. Further parking facilities are already being planned.
Making the switch from bike to train convenient is also a concern of Deutsche Bahn, which is why DB is making local authorities an offer of cooperation: with the Bike+Ride campaign, DB provides advice and contacts and offers local authorities its space for the construction of bicycle parking facilities free of charge. In addition, existing contracts for the purchase of the facilities and, above all, funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative can be used.
With the National Climate Protection Initiative, the Federal Ministry for the Environment has been initiating and funding numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. Its programs and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate protection activities: From the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment support measures. This diversity is a guarantee for good ideas. The National Climate Initiative helps to anchor climate protection on the ground. It benefits consumers as well as companies, municipalities and educational institutions.
The Erlangen project was 60% funded by the national climate protection initiative and 288 new, comfortable parking spaces were created at the main station. Some of these are located on the east side of the main station with two-storey facilities, but parking spaces were also created on the west side at the Mobilpunkt large parking lot as well as a row of parking spaces with new barrier-free platform access at the south end of platform 4.
A covered bicycle parking facility has been planned in order to continuously expand the bicycle parking options at Erlangen's main railway station. Such facilities have been built in many European cities in recent years and the concept has proved successful. In a large building, (mostly two-storey) metal facilities are available for parking and locking up bicycles. Bicycle parking garages are safe, user-friendly and space-saving. The bikes can be parked close to the platform, protected from the weather and theft. Bicycle parking garages are equipped with lighting and surveillance cameras, and there are also repair stations, charging facilities for e-bikes and lockers as additional services for cyclists. The bicycle parking garage at Erlangen station is to be built between platform 1 and the western Stadtmauerstraße, with additional access via the Güterhallenstraße overpass and space for 798 bikes. Cargo bikes and trailers are also included in the planning. Accessibility (ramps instead of steps, etc.) and attractive and environmentally friendly greenery will be important. Depending on the budget situation, the parking facility will be built in the coming years.
