Bicycle parking
Stand: 28.05.2024
The "Transport Development and Mobility Plan 2030" and the "Bicycle City of the Future Plan" state that the number of bicycle parking spaces in Erlangen is to be greatly increased in the coming years in order to promote cycling.
The expansion of attractive and secure parking facilities for cyclists is an important element in promoting cycling in Erlangen. Parking facilities help to make cycling more attractive, because people who know that their bike is easily accessible and safely parked also prefer to use it. However, parking facilities offer great benefits not only for cyclists, but also for pedestrians: properly parked bicycles increase the quality of stay in a place and paths are kept clear, making them barrier-free and safe.
The creation of bicycle parking facilities therefore promotes future-proof, space-saving, sustainable and cost-effective mobility. The city of Erlangen is committed to both large facilities at central points (e.g. at train stations) and the widespread construction of small facilities. Current projects are presented in the drop-down menu.
This project involves the widespread installation of new metal racks for leaning bicycles to prevent them from being parked illegally. A block of five bike racks takes up the space required by a single car parking space. It is often advisable to erect two or three blocks of five, which are usually supplemented by one to three special cargo bike racks. With the help of the city's population, over 250 locations in the city center where citizens would like to have parking facilities were collected for the 1000-rack program. The current status of implementation, which is scheduled for completion in 2024, can be seen on the online map . This recipe for success is now being extended to the rest of the city: In early summer 2022, all interested parties were once again able to submit precise and individual location proposals, which have now been reviewed and implementation is set to begin in the near future.
The smooth and quick transfer from bike to train is an important factor in strengthening the environmental network. After a few hours or even days of absence, the bike should not only be able to be found again, but should also be waiting at the station undamaged. In addition, parking must be quick and convenient so that you can catch the train in comfort. To ensure this, the city of Erlangen has created or expanded up to 300 partially covered bicycle parking spaces at Eltersdorf, Bruck and Paul-Gossen-Straße stations. Infrastructure is even being created at various points at the main station.
Deutsche Bahn is also keen to make it easier for people to switch from cycling to rail travel, which is why DB is making local authorities an offer of cooperation: with the Bike+Ride Offensive, DB provides advice and contacts and offers local authorities its space for the construction of bicycle parking facilities free of charge. In addition, existing contracts for the purchase of the facilities and, above all, funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative can be used.
With the National Climate Protection Initiative, the Federal Ministry for the Environment has been initiating and funding numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. Its programs and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate protection activities: From the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment support measures. This diversity is a guarantee for good ideas. The National Climate Initiative helps to anchor climate protection on the ground. It benefits consumers as well as companies, local authorities and educational institutions.
The Erlangen project received 60% funding from the national climate protection initiative and 288 new, comfortable parking spaces were created at the main railway station. Some of these are located on the east side of the main station with two-storey facilities, but parking spaces were also created on the west side at the Mobilpunkt large parking lot and a row of parking bays with new barrier-free platform access at the south end of platform 4.
A bicycle parking garage is currently being planned in order to continuously expand the bicycle parking facilities at Erlangen Central Station. Bicycle parking garages have been built in many European cities in recent years and the concept has proven its worth. In a large building there are (usually two-storey) metal facilities for parking and locking up bicycles. Bicycle parking garages are safe, user-friendly and space-saving. The bikes can be parked close to the platform, protected from the weather and theft. Bicycle parking garages are equipped with lighting and surveillance cameras, and there are repair stations, charging facilities for e-bikes and lockers as additional services for cyclists. The bicycle parking garage at Erlangen station is to be built between platform 1 and the western Stadtmauerstraße, with additional access via the Güterhallenstraße overpass and space for around 1600 bikes. Cargo bikes and trailers are also included in the planning. Accessibility (ramps instead of steps, etc.) and attractive and environmentally friendly greenery are also important. The bicycle parking garage is currently being planned down to the finest detail and is due to be built in the coming years.
