Parking Plan for Downtown Is Being Further Developed
Stand: 25.06.2026
The city of Erlangen is continuing to systematically develop its downtown parking plan. Following the positive results of the pilot project around Bohlenplatz, these successful measures will be expanded to other areas in the future. At the same time, a new temporary parking lot with 49 spaces is being built next to the kubic culture and education campus.
Bohlenplatz Pilot Project Shows Positive Results
The evaluation of the pilot project around Bohlenplatz is positive overall. The goal was to use the existing parking space more efficiently and to better balance the different needs of residents, visitors, and business owners.

The evaluation shows that the measures are working: parking congestion has been reduced, the average parking duration has been shortened, and the availability of parking spaces has improved. The newly established delivery zones and the mixed-use parking principle—where residents and visitors can use the same parking spaces—were rated particularly positively. A majority of the participating business owners also support continuing the program.
Against this backdrop, the regulations tested at Bohlenplatz are to be gradually expanded to other resident parking zones in the city center. If necessary, minor adjustments will be made to accommodate the specific circumstances of each area.
Schillerstraße Resident Parking Zone to Be Managed
The first area to be managed will be Resident Parking Zone 7 around Schillerstraße. There, parking management will be introduced based on the proven mixed-use parking model:
- Residents with a parking permit can continue to use the parking spaces
- Visitors can park for a fee during managed hours.
This measure is intended to distribute existing parking spaces more equitably while reducing traffic caused by people searching for parking. Implementation is scheduled for 2027. Advance notice will be provided.
New parking lot at kubic creates additional parking spaces
To alleviate parking pressure in the vicinity of the new kubic culture and education campus, the city plans to establish a temporary parking lot west of the building with a total of 49 spaces. Two of these spaces will be reserved for people with disabilities. The parking spaces will be managed by a public operator. The parking lot is intended for temporary use until the entire area between kubic and the Christian-Ernst-Gymnasium (CEG) is redesigned.

The city administration plans to operate the lot using short-term and daily parking tickets on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This model
- is based on the existing regulations in the city center
- prevents parking pressure from shifting to adjacent residential streets and
- at the same time enables the economical use of the space.
This would allow the construction costs to be recouped within a few years, before the revenue benefits the city budget.
