A section of Konrad-Haußner-Straße was widened to provide access to the construction site. The nearby playground is fenced off from the street with construction fencing to minimize potential hazards from construction traffic. There are also no-stopping zones in this area.

Reason for the New Construction

The new construction, including a pumping station, is a requirement under water law to reduce water pollution by significantly increasing the storage capacity. During heavy rainfall events, the stormwater overflow basin is designed to temporarily store most of the combined stormwater runoff from Eltersdorf so that it can then be conveyed at a controlled rate to the Erlangen wastewater treatment plant. The new construction is intended to reduce the environmental impact on the water body/Regnitz River.

New Construction in Two Phases

To ensure smooth operation, the northern half of the basin (approx. 1,700 m³) and the new pumping station will first be constructed and put into operation. The old basin can then be dismantled. The space thus freed up can be used for the construction of the southern half of the basin (Phase 2) with an additional capacity of approximately 1,700 cubic meters.

Once the project is completed and the green space has been cleared, the areas used for construction will undergo ecological restoration. This will be achieved through:

• Developing areas with sandy nutrient-poor grasslands or borders of perennials around the covered basin chambers
• New plantings of shrubs.
