Starting signal for the climate awakening

Stand: 28.05.2024

With its decision on October 27, Erlangen City Council decided to make the "Climate Awakening Roadmap" catalog of measures the basis for further action. New city employees are to be recruited in 2023 in order to start implementing 14 selected measures.

The 14 measures also include the 12 "lighthouse measures", which were identified by the ifeu experts involved. They either have a high priority due to their role model function, have a very high CO2 savings potential or are particularly innovative. In November, Erlangen City Council will decide how many new jobs will be created for Climate Awakening.

Citizens, companies and interest groups are called upon to participate in Climate Awakening with their contribution to the "Climate City Contract" and thus make Erlangen's climate neutrality possible.

Measures of the Climate Awakening

The Climate Awakening roadmap describes how Erlangen can become climate-neutral through cross-sectoral climate protection measures and measures in the areas of energy supply, buildings, mobility, food and consumption. For 14 of the proposed measures, which promise a rapid and high reduction in CO2 emissions and motivate other stakeholders within the city's society to take action, new staff are to be recruited in the coming year to tackle the measures in greater depth.

A list of the 14 measures can be found here. The exemplary effect of the city administration plays an important role, with the aim of achieving climate neutrality by 2030. At the same time, the refurbishment of properties is also to be further promoted among other stakeholders in order to achieve a climate-neutral building stock. Among other things, a large number of independent and neutral advisory services are to be brought together under one roof in the so-called "one-stop store".

Another key aspect is the so-called heat transition: The aim is to decarbonize Erlangen's district heating network and smaller heating networks (local heating networks), i.e. to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The mobility transition is to be pushed further in order to reduce traffic congestion and create more places for people to meet and relax. As a first step, the measures already set out in the traffic development and mobility plan (VEP) to strengthen climate-friendly mobility over the use of the car are to be pursued and deepened.

This will be accompanied by increased lobbying at state and federal level to improve the framework conditions for municipal climate protection.

Call for online signatures for the "Climate City Contract"

In future, climate protection should be carried out more in partnership with urban society in order to jointly achieve the goal of climate neutrality. This new understanding of cooperation is to be embodied by the Climate City Contract. All people, companies and interest groups from Erlangen are called upon to join the symbolic "Climate City Contract" and submit an individual contribution to the climate revolution. The contract can now be signed online.
