"Road of the future" research project
Stand: 28.05.2024
The city of Erlangen has participated in the "Road of the Future" research project in recent years. The aim of the project was to gain scientific insights into how municipalities can be supported in the planning and implementation of resource-efficient roads.
The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMF) and ran from April 2019 to September 2022. The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) coordinated the joint project, with the cities of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg and Erlangen participating as model cities. Other project partners were the Fraunhofer IGB and Drees & Sommer.
In Erlangen, Siemens Real Estate, which was involved in the project as an associated partner, is constructing a large area with new office buildings, the so-called Siemens Campus. As an open urban quarter, it is available to the entire population of Erlangen. The project focused on the mobility needs and mobility behavior of the users of the newly constructed Siemens Campus. New forms and offers of mobility were to be strengthened. To this end, mobility stations were set up and equipped with rental vehicles. Among other things, the Nuremberg bicycle rental system VAG_Rad was tested. The main objectives were to strengthen the environmental network and promote intermodality and multimodality.

Results: MobilHub, guidelines and digital tools
As part of the project, a so-called MobilHub (mobility station without car sharing) has been set up in Module 1 of the Siemens Campus, which is located east of the Paul-Gossen-Straße S-Bahn station, with the aim of promoting sustainable and climate-friendly mobility.
The offer on the campus is supported by other MobilPunkte (mobility stations with car sharing) in the city. These are located in the large parking lot at the western entrance to Erlangen train station and in Mozartstraße near the Himbeerpalast. Further information can be found at www.erlangen.de/mobilpunkt
Various sharing options are available for everyone to use at the stations. As part of the project, the Nuremberg bike rental system VAG_Rad was tested with a total of 60 bikes as a pilot for the period from March 1 to September 30 in the city of Erlangen. Following the successful test phase, the aim is currently to establish the bike rental system on a permanent basis.
Several publications have been produced as part of the overall project. In addition to a guide to planning and implementing resource-efficient street spaces, three tools were developed that are now available to all interested parties: a planning tool for generating ideas with the help of a digital catalog of measures, a tool for organizing the participation of various interest groups and a quick check tool that enables a comparison between the actual and target state of street spaces.
A podcast was also produced, which provides information on various areas of urban mobility in seven insightful episodes.
The research project paid particular attention to children and their ideas about the street of the future. An art competition was called for pupils from all classes, and the resulting artworks were comprehensively evaluated.
