Mobilpunkte - Car sharing
Stand: 11.09.2024
To encourage people to switch from private cars to other means of transport, there are mobility points in the city. You can find the locations and further information on this overview.
In the city of Erlangen, mobility stations based on the Bremen model of mobility points are being set up on public streets.
Car sharing is an important component in promoting multimodal mobility. In line with the motto "using instead of owning", this service helps to relieve the burden on public space and at the same time closes a gap between public transport and private transport. Car sharing makes it possible to be mobile without owning a car. For example, it is very attractive for people who usually travel by public transport but need a car for a short time or at short notice for certain purposes - for example, a trip at the weekend or when public transport services are inadequate at off-peak times.
The concept of the mobility points provides for the linking of different mobility services and modes of transport at suitable locations in the city. The basic equipment includes a parking space for a car sharing vehicle, proximity to a public transport stop and bicycle parking facilities. The stations should also be easily accessible on foot. Depending on the location, the facilities can be expanded to include additional services (e.g. bike rental system, e-scooters, cargo bikes, cabs, etc.). In future, the stations are to be equipped with e-car sharing vehicles and charging facilities.
The stations will be marked with a stele bearing the word mark "Mobilpunkt" to make them easier to recognize. The cities of Nuremberg and Fürth also operate Mobilpunkte in line with the Bremen concept. Due to the close commuter links on the Nuremberg-Fürth-Erlangen axis, emphasis was placed on recognizability.
A special form of Mobilpunkt is the Mobilhub, which is a mobility station without car sharing.
The map provides an overview of the locations of the mobile points:
Initially, one to three car sharing vehicles will be provided at the individual stations. If there is sufficient demand, the respective station can be expanded. To prevent private vehicles from blocking the parking spaces for the car sharing vehicles, the individual parking spaces are colored orange. This also increases visibility on the street.
The locations should be recognizable as mobility stations at first glance. A uniform appearance of the stations is required for recognition. To this end, a design was developed that was visually adapted to the neighboring cities. The name "Mobilpunkt" is based on the Bremen model.
The equipment for the Mobilpunkte (station, bicycle racks, signage, etc.) is provided by the city of Erlangen. The car sharing parking spaces are allocated through a transparent allocation procedure in accordance with the Car Sharing Act.
The use of the individual stations will be evaluated. If it turns out that a location is not well received, the Mobilpunkt can be relocated. Other stations that are particularly popular can be extended and expanded. If the service is well received overall, further mobile points will be set up in the city of Erlangen.
Car sharing is the low-cost alternative to underused private cars, second cars and company cars.
If you drive your car less than 12,000 km a year, you can save a lot of money with car sharing. At the same time, you are supporting an environmentally friendly traffic concept, as car sharing reduces the number of cars used and saves parking spaces, which are particularly scarce in cities. It is an ideal complement to public transport and cycling.
Car sharing means that you share cars with other people. Depending on availability, you can book vehicles by the hour, day or week. This allows you to use a car without having to own it.
Experience from other cities shows that station-based car sharing helps to reduce car ownership and thus relieve congestion on public roads. In Bremen, recent user surveys have shown that one car sharing vehicle replaces up to 16 privately owned vehicles. In Erlangen, too, the potential is seen to contribute to a reduction in private car ownership through the expansion of station-based car sharing. Mobile points make it possible for car sharing services to be clearly visible on public streets and ensure that they are linked to other modes of transport. Especially in densely built-up areas where there is high parking pressure and at central transfer points, mobility stations can thus support multimodal mobility behavior.
A distinction can be made between classic, station-based car sharing and free-floating car sharing (without a fixed station). The classic (station-based) car sharing system, in which vehicles are parked at a fixed location, borrowed there and returned to the same parking space, leads to a reduction in the number of private cars and car use overall. This effect is significantly lower with free-floating systems. In addition to the elimination of private cars, it is also important to consider the avoidance of new car purchases, especially of second and third cars.
There are currently three providers in Erlangen that make car sharing vehicles available:
