Notes:

• Starting in 2001, figures are published as of January 1 (previously as of July 1).
• As of January 1, 2008, only registered vehicles are reported (excluding temporarily decommissioned vehicles), i.e., only permanent decommissionings are included. Temporarily decommissioned motor vehicles accounted for approximately 12% of the vehicle fleet. The fleet also includes vehicles with insurance license plates but excludes those with red or customs license plates. Up to and including January 1, 2007, this figure included temporarily decommissioned vehicles.
• Through 1995: Includes station wagons. From 1996 onward: Due to new European regulations, the previously used categorization of vehicles is no longer possible in some cases. Instead of passenger cars and station wagons, passenger cars—including other “M1” vehicles—have been reported since 1996. “M1” vehicles are motor vehicles designed for the transport of passengers with at least four wheels and a maximum of 9 seats (including the driver’s seat). In addition to passenger cars, this category also includes, among others, recreational vehicles, ambulances, and hearses.
• As of January 1, 2008, the regional classification of vehicles is based on the owner’s place of residence or the company’s headquarters, branch office, or business location. A location that differs from the registration district therefore no longer appears in the statistics.
• The 1972 administrative reform did not affect the motor vehicle and passenger car fleet until 1973
