Temporarily deregistered vehicles accounted for around 12% of the vehicle stock. The stock also includes vehicles with insurance license plates but without vehicles with red or customs license plates. Up to and including 01.01.2007 including temporarily immobilized vehicles.
- Up to and including 1995: Including station wagons. From 1996: Due to new European legislation, the previously used categorization of vehicles is no longer possible in some cases. Instead of passenger cars and estate cars, passenger cars including other "M1" vehicles have been shown since 1996. "M1" vehicles are passenger vehicles with at least four wheels and a maximum of 9 seats (including the driver's seat). In addition to passenger cars, this also includes mobile homes, ambulances and hearses.
- As of 01.01.2008, the regional classification of vehicles is based on the owner's place of residence or the company headquarters, branch or office. A location that differs from the registration district therefore no longer appears in the statistics.
- The 1972 territorial reform does not have an effect on the number of motor vehicles and passenger cars until 1973
