"The Future of Elementary Schools and Full-Day Care" Program

Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, the legal entitlement for elementary school children—initially for first graders—will take effect. This entitlement will be gradually expanded to include subsequent grade levels in the years that follow. The legal entitlement is intended to guarantee full-day educational and care services for schoolchildren. This imposes an obligation on the City of Erlangen to consider how to ensure this legal entitlement through youth services and schools, to take appropriate measures, and, in particular, to make elementary schools “structurally ready” for this purpose.

Five elementary schools were prioritized as part of the “Future of Elementary Schools and All-Day Care” program (Friedrich-Rückert-Schule, Pestalozzischule, Hermann-Hedenus-Grundschule, Mönauschule, and Michael-Poeschke-Schule). Planning has already begun at three schools:
- An extension for all-day care, including a cafeteria, is being built at the Friedrich-Rückert-Schule. Completion is scheduled for summer 2026
- The “Cooperative All-Day Education” pilot project launched at the Michael-Poeschke-Schule in the 2021–2022 school year. An expansion building will also be constructed at this school. Construction began in the summer of 2025. Completion is scheduled for late 2027
- As part of the ISEK Büchenbach-Nord project, planning for the Mönauschule / Hermann-Hedenus-Mittelschule school site began in late 2022. Due to the tight budget situation, implementation of this project will not take place until 2029 at the earliest

The total investment for the various measures ranges from 80 million to 90 million euros
As part of the Büchenbach-Nord school site development project, a comprehensive participatory process involving various expert discussions and workshops was carried out in 2024.
