Fire Department; Course Registration

Registration takes place online via the Education Management System (BMS). To register, applicants must meet the prerequisites specified for the respective course type. The commander must confirm in BMS that the course prerequisites have been met. The application is forwarded to the state government via the municipality and the office of the district fire chief at the district administration office or independent city. Registered participants will receive their course invitation by email well in advance of the course start date and must confirm receipt.

• Admission to courses at firefighting schools is limited to individuals who are at least 18 years old (see No. 6.5.1 of the Bavarian Fire Service Act Implementation Regulations).
• The specific admission requirements for each course are listed in the course catalog and must be observed (see “Course Catalog of the State Firefighting Schools” under “Related Links”).

Course fee:

• If members of volunteer fire departments, mandatory fire departments, and professional fire departments participate in the courses, no fees will be charged to the municipalities.
• If members of industrial fire departments participate in the courses, a course fee will be charged.

Meals and Lodging:

• Members of volunteer fire departments, professional fire departments, and compulsory fire departments, as well as those holding special command ranks under Art. 19 of the Bavarian Fire Service Act (BayFwG), receive free meals and lodging while participating in courses at the state fire service schools.
• Members of plant fire departments will be charged for meals and lodging.

Miscellaneous:

• Necessary and documented travel expenses for members of volunteer fire departments and mandatory fire departments, as well as for those holding special command ranks under Art. 19 BayFwG, will be reimbursed. For distances traveled by public transportation, necessary and documented travel expenses are reimbursed up to the cost of second-class fare, including expenses for travel to and from the training location via public transportation. For distances traveled by private vehicle, course participants as defined in the first sentence are granted a mileage allowance per kilometer traveled. If other course participants were given a ride, a ride allowance per kilometer may be claimed for the participants who were given a ride. The course participants who were given a ride are not themselves entitled to a mileage allowance. If course participants as defined in the first sentence travel in a government vehicle, the mileage allowance will be reimbursed to the sponsoring agency of the respective government office upon request. The amount of the mileage allowance is determined in accordance with the provisions of the Bavarian Travel Expenses Act. Taxi fares are not reimbursed.
   
• For members of plant fire departments, lost wages and travel expenses are borne by the sending company.
   
• Employees are entitled to time off with continued payment of wages, including fringe benefits and allowances, for participation in training events. The private employer may assert claims for reimbursement against the sending municipality for these costs.
   
• Self-employed firefighters receive compensation for lost wages in accordance with the Bavarian Fire Service Act.
   
• Special regulations apply to participants in IT and civil protection training courses.
