Driver's License; Applying for a Replacement Due to Loss, Damage, or Theft

If your driver’s license has been lost or destroyed—for example, due to theft, damage rendering it illegible, or loss—you will need a new driver’s license, unless you choose to give up your driving privileges.

If you do not immediately report the loss of your driver’s license and apply for a replacement, you are committing an administrative offense.

Note: Even as a replacement for a paper driver’s license, you will receive a temporary card-style driver’s license. Old pink or gray paper driver’s licenses are no longer issued.

You must submit your application in person because your signature is required to issue the driver's license card. The application will be printed for you at the Citizens' Office.

The issuance of a replacement driver’s license depends on the specific circumstances of each individual case. Please check with the relevant driver’s license authority in advance to find out what requirements must be met.

If requested by the driver’s license authority, you must submit a sworn statement—for which a fee is charged—regarding the whereabouts of the document in the event of loss or other misplacement of your driver’s license. In this statement, you affirm the accuracy of the information you provide.

You must apply for a replacement driver's license at your local driver's license office.

It takes Bundesdruckerei about 3 weeks to produce a driver's license.

• a recent biometric photograph (front view)
• driver's license that is no longer valid (if applicable)
• Police Report of Theft
  If your driver's license has been stolen, you may also need to provide a police report.
• Affidavit
  

  If your driver’s license is lost or otherwise goes missing, you may be required—depending on the circumstances of the individual case and at the request of the driver’s license authority—to submit an affidavit.

  If your previous driver's license was not issued in Erlangen, you can obtain a copy of your driver's license record from the agency that issued it upon request.

• Fees for a replacement driver's license are generally about 35 to 45 euros
• plus, if applicable, fees for the sworn affidavit (30.70 €)
• plus, if applicable, fees for direct mailing (approx. 6 €)
