If you hold or have held a service driver's license issued by the German Armed Forces, the Federal Police, or a state police department, you may be issued a general driver's license for the corresponding classes under simplified conditions.

A service driver's permit issued by the German Armed Forces, the Federal Police, or the state police authorizes you to drive only official vehicles. It is valid only for the duration of your employment.
However, based on your service driver’s license, you may apply to the local driver’s license authority to obtain a general driver’s license in the form of an EU card-style driver’s license.
If you apply for a driver’s license after your employment has ended, the driver’s license authority may require you to take a driving test if there are facts that justify the assumption that you no longer possess the necessary knowledge and skills.
You can apply to have a service driver's permit converted at the local driver's license authority (= district administrative authority).
- Commercial Driver's License or Certificate
- valid ID card or passport
- a recent biometric photograph (front view)
- Civilian driver's license (if available)
- additional documents, if applicable
Renewal of a commercial driver's license: approx. 40 euros
Driver's License System
You can handle driver’s license matters digitally at the Citizen Service Center or in person on the ground floor of City Hall. This includes, for example, all standard driver’s licenses or exchanging an old driver’s license, etc.
