The preservation of folk music, song and dance is part of the preservation of local history. In many places, the preservation and research of folk music is the task of the local heritage caretakers. In some cases, additional folk music caretakers have been appointed in the municipalities.

The task of folk music preservation is to record, document and pass on these traditional forms of music and dance. It should also encourage people of all generations to engage in their own musical activities and to be creative with traditional texts, melodies and dances. Beyond the preservation of tradition, folk music opens up a wide range of contemporary forms of expression to broad sections of the population and enables cross-societal or intercultural exchange. Folk music educators therefore also act as mediators between traditional music and other musical trends.
