Vehicle License Plates; Applying for a Transferable License Plate

Interchangeable license plates may be assigned to motor vehicles designed and built for the transportation of passengers with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat (Class M1), motorcycles and light four-wheeled motor vehicles (Class L vehicles), as well as trailers with a maximum authorized mass of 750 kg (Class O1), for example, two passenger cars, or one passenger car and one motorhome, or two motorcycles, or two light trailers; however, not two vehicles of different classes, such as a passenger car and a motorcycle.

Of the vehicles registered with interchangeable license plates, one or both may also be classic cars. The letter “H” on the classic car license plate is then affixed to the vehicle-specific portion of the interchangeable license plate. The same applies to vehicles authorized to display an “E” license plate. The restriction to the same license plate sizes ensures that the required lighting for the rear license plates is properly provided.

The interchangeable license plate consists of two parts: one part that remains on the vehicle and an attachable additional part that authorizes the vehicle for use on the road. The identification numbers on an interchangeable license plate are identical except for the last digit. The last digit of the vehicle’s identification number is displayed on the vehicle-specific part of the license plate. The remaining part of the interchangeable license plate’s identification number is displayed on the detachable part.

The prerequisite is that the vehicles belong to the same vehicle class and that license plates of the same dimensions can be used on the vehicles.
