Informationen
A vehicle license plate consists of a code indicating the administrative district and an identification number. Vehicles belonging to federal and state agencies, the diplomatic corps, and privileged international organizations are issued special license plates.
The license plate number may be written with or without a hyphen in the registration certificate. Both forms are equally valid.
The administrative district codes and identification numbers are printed in black on a white background with a black border on a license plate (“standard” license plates).
License plates must not be reflective, obscured, or dirty. Furthermore, they must not be covered with glass, film, or similar materials. License plates must be reflective and must bear the inspection and supervision mark with the corresponding registration number on the front.
The dimensions of the license plates are as follows:
- single-line license plates: maximum width: 520 mm, height: 110 mm,
- two-line license plates: Maximum width: 340 mm (280 mm for two- and three-wheeled motor vehicles), height: 200 mm,
- motorcycle license plates: minimum/maximum width: 180 mm/220 mm, height: 200 mm; and
- reduced two-line license plates: Maximum width: 255 mm, height: 130 mm.
Reduced two-line license plates are intended only for light motorcycles, as well as for lof tractors in accordance with Directive 2003/37/EC or Regulation (EU) No. 167/2013 and their trailers. So-called quads do not receive reduced-size license plates, as they do not comply with Directive 2003/37/EC or Regulation (EU) No. 167/2013, even if they are classified as light motor vehicles.
License plates must be permanently affixed to the front and rear of the motor vehicle. For single-axle tractors, a license plate on the front is sufficient; for trailers and motorcycles, a license plate on the rear is sufficient. Rear license plates must be illuminated.
