Vehicle license plates; application for a red license plate for test and transfer drives

Red license plates are issued by the locally competent registration authority to reliable vehicle manufacturers, vehicle parts manufacturers, vehicle workshops and vehicle dealers for a limited period or revocably for recurring operational use, even on different vehicles. A license plate with red lettering on a white background with a red border consists of a distinguishing sign and an identification number which, like the temporary license plate, consists of digits only and begins with "06".

Note: The red license plate must be used with the special vehicle registration booklet.

The applicant must

• be reliable and
• have a vehicle-related business registered in their name.

You must submit the application to the licensing authority in whose jurisdiction you have your place of business. You can also authorize a representative to do this with your written power of attorney.

If an application form is required, you can obtain it in advance from the licensing authority and fill it out at home. Depending on the services offered by your licensing authority, a download form or an online service via the Internet may be available.

Your insurance company will be automatically informed by the registration authority about the allocation of the license plate.

The registration authority will allocate the license plates to you.

• Business registration
• Valid identity card or passport of the business owner (or all business owners)
• In case of representation: written power of attorney and additionally valid identity card or passport of the authorized representative
• Declaration on vehicle tax collection
• for legal entities: Extract from the commercial register and identity card of all managing directors or authorized signatories
• Proof of the applicant's reliability
  to be proven, as a rule, by information from the Federal Central Criminal Register (certificate of good conduct), information from the Central Commercial Register or information from the Central Traffic Register at the Federal Motor Transport Authority
• if no application form is provided: written explanation of the need
• Insurance confirmation in the form of an eVB number

The fee for the allocation of a red license plate is between EUR 25.60 and EUR 205.00, depending on the work involved.
