Vehicle license plates; applying for a replacement in the event of theft, loss or illegibility

If you have lost one or both of your vehicle's license plates, if they have been stolen or if they are no longer legible, a new license plate must be issued. The stolen or lost license plate will not be issued again for at least 10 years and will be marked with a tracing notice.

This is the only way to prevent you from being charged if third parties commit administrative offenses or criminal acts with your old license plates.

You may not operate your vehicle without license plates.

If you have lost your registration certificate part I or II (vehicle registration certificate or registration document) or license plates, you can have a replacement issued at the Citizens' Registration Office. The prerequisite is a declaration in lieu of an oath, which you submit at the Citizens' Registration Office.

If license plates are lost, a change of registration is required.

If license plates or vehicle documents are stolen, a report should also be made to the police.

  if only one license plate has been lost, please bring the other license plate with you

• At the request of the registration authority; affirmation in lieu of an oath by the vehicle owner
• In the event of theft: report the theft to the police

• Replacement for a registration certificate part II (formerly vehicle registration document): 59.30 euros
• Replacement for a registration certificate part I (formerly vehicle registration document): 42.60 euros
• (if a changeover to new vehicle documents is required in this context: 57.20 euros)
• Re-registration: 62.30 euros

The new vehicle registration document (registration certificate part II) can only be issued after the serial number of the lost document has been published in the Verkehrsblatt. This process takes 2 to 3 weeks.
