Vehicle License Plates; Reporting Theft, Loss, or Recovery
If you have lost one or both of your vehicle's license plates, if they have been stolen, or if they are no longer legible, you must be issued a new license plate.

Only by reporting stolen or lost license plates can you prevent being held liable if third parties commit administrative offenses or criminal acts using your license plates.
Report the theft to the police immediately if a license plate has been stolen.
Also report the theft, loss, or discovery of the license plate to the appropriate vehicle registration authority. At the request of the registration authority, the vehicle owner must submit a sworn statement. Authorized representatives may not act on the owner’s behalf in this matter.
In the event of loss or theft, you must also apply to the registration authority for a new license plate (see “Motor Vehicle License Plates; Replacement Due to Theft, Loss, or Recovery” under “Related Topics”). You may not operate the vehicle without license plates.
