In order to exercise a trade that requires a permit or supervision, you regularly need an extract from the central trade register, which, in addition to a certificate of good conduct, serves to check your reliability with the authorities.

Online procedure
Central trade register information (central online portal)
To be able to submit an application for information from the Central Trade Register via the online portal of the Federal Office of Justice, you need
- a new identity card or an electronic residence permit, in each case with the online ID function activated,
- a card reader to read the ID document,
- the AusweisApp2 and
- if necessary, a digital recording device (e.g. scanner or digital camera) to upload proof.
Applying for information from the central trade register for companies entered in the commercial register
You can use this online application to apply for a central trade register information for companies entered in the commercial register.
Citizen-friendly and digital: simply complete this online application directly via your Internet browser. In many cases, this will save you a trip to the authorities.
The central trade register is kept at the Federal Office of Justice in Bonn. The following are entered there:
- Administrative decisions due to unreliability or unsuitability, in particular the refusal, withdrawal or revocation of a trade license and the prohibition of a trade,
- Waivers during withdrawal or revocation proceedings,
- Final and binding decisions on fines for an administrative offense committed by the trader himself or his representative or agent during or in connection with the exercise of a trade, if the fine amounts to more than 200 euros.
- Final criminal convictions for certain violations of the Undeclared Employment Act, the Temporary Employment Act or the Criminal Code committed in the course of or in connection with the exercise of the trade, if a custodial sentence of more than three months or a fine of more than 90 daily rates has been imposed.
Anyone may request information about the contents of the register relating to them.
The application must be submitted to the local registration authority.
The person concerned or their legal representative is authorized to submit the application. The application cannot be made by an authorized representative (e.g. a spouse or a lawyer).
The information can also be requested for submission to the authorities for the purpose of preparing a decision on an application for admission to a trade or for checking the reliability of a trade requiring supervision. It will then be sent directly to the authority. Upon request, the authority must grant the person concerned access to the information.
